Japan and Iran remain undefeated at the 2026 Asian Volleyball Championship pool stage: signals for the Olympic race

At the Fukuoka arena, near the end of the first set between Japan and Australia, the ball was set out to the right side for Yuji Nishida. He hammered the ball through the block, and it bounced into the stands. That point was his 16th successful spike of the match, finishing with an 82% spike success rate. The 2026 AVC Men's Volleyball Asian Championship, hosted by Japan, carries far greater weight than a continental title. The results will open slots for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and the 2027 World Cup – two arenas no Asian team wants to miss. For that reason, pool-stage wins are not just a formality. The pool stage has ended with two teams undefeated and without dropping a set: hosts Japan and Iran. Both have shown control on the scoreboard, but what is more notable is how they managed their lineups and maximized their attacking options. Japan recorded an important win over Australia. Yuji Nishida finished with 16 points and an 82% success rate – a rare number in a continental match. That revealed Japan’s setter system produced comfortable deliveries, but also that Australia’s block was not strong enough to put pressure on him. In another match, Ran Takahashi scored 13 points with five service aces against Bahrain. Having multiple attacking options allows Japan to avoid heavy reliance on one player. Iran were equally impressive. Opposite hitter Poriya Khanzadeh scored 20 points, while both outside hitters added 11 points each, showing balanced scoring and high reliability on the wings. Iran’s game still revolves around powerful attacking, but they did not fall into a one-dimensional pattern. Chinese Taipei claimed their first win, a great relief for the team’s morale. Captain Chang Yu-Sheng was the hero with six kill blocks, supported by the outside hitters. Their blocking became a formidable weapon, one that could prove useful in tighter matches. Meanwhile, India produced an encouraging performance as captain Vinith Charles scored 19 points, including solo blocks for points. However, their path to the quarterfinals was not entirely in their hands. India needed to wait for the result of the Oman–Bahrain match in another pool, a common scenario when third-place teams are compared. Looking at the overall picture, Japan and Iran are the two strongest candidates. But this is only the pool stage. Opponents like Australia, Bahrain, and Qatar are not medal contenders. Nishida’s and Takahashi’s attacking numbers were produced against limited defensive systems. Data does not lie, but it only answers the questions we ask. Based on my experience following these matches, a team can fully control the scoreline against weaker opponents, but that does not mean they will survive a more active defensive setup. Japan have a versatile offense, but can they keep their rhythm under heavy serving pressure? Iran rely heavily on Khanzadeh’s power; do they have a Plan B when their reception is not perfect?
